Learn About CBD

What is Hemp?

Hemp, often called Industrial Hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species.  Hemp is grown with high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and low levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant.  There are over 50,000 known uses of hemp.  Hemp seeds contain an impressive amount of protein, nutrients, and essential fatty acids.  Hemp oil has increasingly become popular in food, drinks, topical lotions, and several health and beauty products.

What is CBD?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of the over 100 phytocannabinoids (or compounds) found in the cannabis sativa plant.   It was discovered in 1940.   It is the most common naturally occurring, non psychoactive cannabinoid found in the plant.  CBD dominant cannabis strains and derived products are an appealing option for patients looking for possible relief and potential treatment for a wide range of conditions.

What is Full Spectrum Hemp?

When CBD is referred to as full spectrum or whole plant, it means that the product contains all of the cannabinoids found in the cannabis sativa plant.   Each cannabinoid in the plant offers different benefits for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions.  Full Spectrum products have all the cannabinoids and allow them to work together to magnify their therapeutic effects.  This is called the entourage effect.

How CBD Works:

Cannabinoids, including CBDs, produce effects in the body by attaching to certain receptors.  Our body produces certain cannabinoids on its own though our Endocannabinoid System.  It also has two receptors for cannabinoids, CB1 & CB2.  Research is finding that CBDs attach to these receptors and also direct the body to produce more of its own cannabinoids.

Our Endocannabinoid System:

All of us have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our bodies.  When breaking down the word Endocannabinoid, “cannabionid” comes from cannabis, and “endo” is short for “endogenous” which means that it is produced naturally inside of your body.  So “endocannabinoid” simply means cannabis-like substances that naturally occur inside us.  The ECS is a crucial part of our body, backed up by medical science.  The ECS helps regulate a lot of important functions such as appetite, digestion, immune function, inflammation, mood, sleep, fertility, motor control, pain, and more.  Because cannabis products can stimulate activity of the ECS, they are an obvious option for treatment.

Farm Bill:

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 was a proposed law to remove hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) from Schedule 1 controlled substances and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity.  Its provisions were incorporated in the 2018 US Farm Bill that became law on December 20, 2018.

The full spectrum oil is recommended to be taken sublingually under the tongue and holding for 45 – 60 seconds, 3x a day.  If only taken for sleep, nighttime dosing is fine.  We always agree with the low and slow dosing method.  The Topical products can be applied typically to your skin.  A little goes a long way!
